About the Giants Community Fund
The success of a Major League Baseball club is measured by more than game-winning rallies and pennant drives. Beyond the box scores, a ballclub has a unique opportunity to create partnerships to improve the quality of life in its community. It was that spirit that inspired the Giants to establish the non-profit Giants Community Fund in 1991. Our mission:
The Giants Community Fund uses baseball as a forum to encourage youngsters and families to live healthy, productive lives. The Fund supports Junior Giants summer leagues throughout Northern California and collaborates with the efforts of the San Francisco Giants to provide assistance to targeted community efforts in the areas of Education, Health and Violence Prevention.
Steve Patterson Award
In 2008, the Giants Community Fund was honored by the Sports Philanthropy Project and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with the Steve Patterson Award for Excellence in Sports Philanthropy.
This prestigious award recognizes the work of pro sports foundations and is named in honor of the late Steve Patterson, a UCLA basketball star, NBA player and college coach who believed in using sports philanthropy to make a difference.
The Fund is proud to be the first team foundation in Major League Baseball to receive this honor.
Since its inception in 1991, the Fund has donated over $10 million to community efforts. The Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is managed by a 30-member Board of Directors, and is sustained by contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations through a number of special partnerships and fundraisers.
In 1994, the Board of Directors of the Fund decided that in order to make a significant and lasting impact in the lives of our children, the Fund needed to focus the majority of its resources on an effective and wide-reaching youth program. The Fund sought a program that would give at-risk kids a meaningful partnership with community-based organizations and provide an alternative to drugs, gangs and crime. In doing so, the Fund could play a part in helping to end the cycle of violence. The Junior Giants Program was established as our flagship program and now serves 15,000 boys and girls, ages 5 to 18 in more than 80 communities. Learn more about the Junior Giants »
In addition to supporting public awareness campaigns at AT&T Park such as Until There's A Cure Day, Organ Donor Awareness Night and Strike Out Violence Day, the Fund also annually provides grants to charitable organizations that provide important programs in health, education and violence prevention.
